There is an article about Märzen in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A4rzen" rel="nofollow">Wikipedia</a>. The last lchapter is important. The german Wikipedia mentions the Märzen of "Rothaus" (Eis-Zäpfle) - it is very good. Last year I found out: Damm-brewery from Spain has a good Märzen too.

Reinheitsgebot: Check this <a href="http://www.leo.org/dict/aussprache/r/das_Reinheitsgebot.wav" rel="nofollow">@leo.org</a>

I lucked out, and got one of the last 6-packs of Hacker-Pschorr October Fest left in my city. The specialty beer shop was down to its last 3 6-packs when I pulled in.

Good stuff.

And I definitely agree with Jack about the Hacker-Pschorr Weisse. It is the unofficial "official" beer of my fencing club. I'd love to see this beer featured next summer.

Jack--you're welcome, 'twas good fun. We shall do it again!

SOBro--Thanks for the drink-along feedback. I had to go with the Bell's/Full Sail as Okto alternatives simply because they were stylistaclly similar, and would make for something in the ballpark of the same drinking experience. Sadly, the "drink-along" concept is almost out the window for the next show; only a in a few select markets can someone score both beers, and alternatives are going to be tough to come up with. Still, I'm pretty jazzed about it, as it's the kind of theme that gets me fired up on many levels.

Speaking of which, pb_rick, you're stealing my thunder! Thanks for the "fleshing out" on the Purity Law, but you're inadvertantly stomping on some of show 16. Actually it's cool...your mention of gruit means that when I talk about it, folks will know that I'm not just making shit up!

Hey, good stuff CTBG

An FYI on the German Purity Law - that long R word we have no business knowing how to say/spell :D. One, it's overrated by beer enthusiasts today, and I think you have touched on that in the past, so good job on that. If we only drank these beers we'd be left without Oatmeal Stouts, Wits, Honey Lagers, and a bunch of homebrews I have made that kicked ass. Adjuncts have their place in beer, but they should SUPPORT the barley/wheat malt and never overwhelm it. And they should never be employed to cut costs, as is done commonly today. Two, it wasn't so much about the end product as we think it is today (beer or bread). The law was intended to protect farmers first and foremost, many with noble heritage (think 'Noble Hops'). They were concerned that an introduction to cheaper, "inferior" products would hurt the local bavarian economy, and that would suck for them. Also, the Chuch controlled much of the gruit recipes, the use of hops in beer gave those rebellious Germans (think Luther) something they could use on their own.
Sorry, no footnotes for you all. My brain sucks.

Finally got around to the episode and did the drink along (by myself this time), and I have to say it was more fun when I could bag both beers. Substituting Bell's Amber for the Okto left me out of the action when you guys ganged up on it and I lost some of the "community spirit" I discovered with the previous taste along. Can't blame you for not restricting yourself to beers of national distribution, but I hope I get luckier next show.

Still, good piece of work. Who'd have thought the Reinheitsgebot was created to protect the bread industry. Is nothing pure any more? I thought it was all about the beer.

Thanks for having me on the show, Charlie. It was a pleasure drinking and disussing the beers with you.

I think Hacker-Pschorr has just overtaken the Scorpions at the top of the "coolest things from Germany" list.

Hang tight gang. I'm on it. I'll be downloading the info in my brain to print form soon.

This is the problem with creative experimentation. I keep it in my head and don't put it to paper.

Now that I am giving up my precious recipes, we'll have to add a non-disclosure agreement to the download page. ;-)

Charlie,

Looked on your Recipes link for the Hefe Chicken, but it's a no-show. Same with the Guinny Brat from show 13. Please help out our lazy asses and put these recipes up where we can print them :), unless I'm looking in the wrong place?
