Show #7: HOP-A-PALOOZA!

Prebeer Preamble: Today it’s all about the hops, baby!
Beer #1: I’m joined by husband-and-wife podcasters Evo Terra and Sheila for the first hop-monster, Samuel Adams Imperial Pilsner (2005 Noble Hop Harvest). My goal was to push renowned hophead Evo to his breaking point. Was 110 IBUs enough?
Interbeer Interlude: Adjunct: “Medicinal Hops”. The other uses for our favorite cannabis-cousin, related by herbalist Evo Terra channeling early 20th century eclectic physician Finley Ellingwood. If you suffer from nocturnal emissions or violent sexual excitement, you’d better listen up.
Beer #2: Evo, Sheila and I now tackle mega-strong-mega-hopped Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. It soon becomes clear that we’re in over our heads. This. Is. Not. Pretty.
Beer Geek Moment: “Bitterness”. Not the feeling you get after a bad break-up, but rather beer’s big taste sensation. Everything you need to know, explained in a scant three minutes.
Postbeer Postscript: With the barest fingernail grasp on coherence, Evo and I score up these beers. Which beer gets an alcohol-induced “10″ in one category? Tune in and find out!

I love your show, Charlie. Is it possible for you to post the transcripts to your Beer Geek Moments?

I talked to a local beer shop about getting 120 in Flagstaff. The clerk said it was possible but because of the market he recommended I get some folks together and buy a case, because it’s the only way to get enough interest to buy it. The additional benefit was by buying a case we would get a discount rather than the normal retail rate. I think he said $170-200 was the estimate for 6 4paks. I need to start looking for people
But they did have the 90 minute around in 4pak, I may just have to give it a second try.

Beer’s come a long way since I bought a case of Blatz for $4.99!

Great show, as always. After the reviews, I really hope I get a chance to try one or both of these in the future. Hopefully the Sam Adams will show up again later this year.

Price has never been the issue to me, quality has always been more important.

Charlie-
Please keep up the great work with the show. The tastings intermingled with the other segments works very well and separates your podcast from some of the other Craft Beer podcasts.
The Dogfish 120 Minute IPA tasting was a blast…This is one of my favorite extreme beers and it was like watching you open one of the old fashioned “snake in the can” jokes…The sweet taste is so surprising when you are expecting a hop bomb…
Keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Rich

I am still looking for both the Sam Adams and the 120, but a local store I checked out this last weekend may be able to get them. They did have some of the 90 minute IPA, so I tried a bottle of that. It is really good. With only 9% ABV, it doesn’t have the kick of the 120, but it still could mess you up if you aren’t careful.

Chip–
Yeah, I like the 90 Minute quite a bit (had a couple last night, in fact), but the 120 is definitely worth the wait, for the experience alone. Hopefully your store will come through for you.
